Olive oil, orange flavored holiday cookies in honey syrup

“Melomakarona” and “kourabiedes” are the absolute Greek Christmas treats! Once they show up in the confectionary stores, you can tell it is Christmas time.  My mother used to make them around her name day on December 9, but she had to repeat the baking at least once more, since they would disappear before the 25th! They are easy to make, but easier to eat especially if you make them as tiny as bite size!

Preparation Method

1.     Preheat the oven to 400F

2.     Sift the flour with the baking powder into a large bowl

3.     Mix the oil, the sugar, the brandy, cinnamon and cloves and the zest in another bowl

4.     Mix the baking soda with the orange juice on top of the second bowl and add to the mixture with the liquids

5.     Whisk and add the flour slowly (do not over mix). The dough must be soft and oily

6.     Roll small round cookies (the size of a small walnut)

7.     Place them on baking sheets

8.     Use a fork to decorate by making some wholes on top (not all the way down)

9.     Bake for about 25 minutes and let them cool down completely

 

 

Preparation Method for syrup

1.     Put all ingredients in a pot and boil

2.     As soon as they reach boiling point, let them boil for 3 additional minutes

3.     Let the syrup simmer and start dipping the cookies in small batches leaving them in syrup for no more than 30seconds

4.     Top with ground walnuts

Ingredients

-       500grams olive oil

-       50grams brandy

-       160grams freshly squeezed orange juice

-       1 tsp. baking soda

-       200grams sugar

-       1 tsp. ground cloves

-       2 tsp. cinnamon

-       orange zest (2 oranges)

-       1 kg all purpose flour

-       2 tsp. baking powder

Ingredients for syrup

-       400grams sugar

-       400grams water

-       400grams thyme honey

-       ½ lemon

-       ground walnut for topping

Baking Time: 30 minutes
